Natcher Elementary Using QR Codes In Library

Students at Natcher Elementary are putting away the pencils and paper when writing book summaries. iPads are now the go to gadget.

Each student records their own book review. Then it's distributed to other students with the newest in technology.

"We take that audio file and put it on our Natcher web page. We then create a bar code to put on the back of the book and so when students scan the bar code you will hear the persons voice," says student Carly Miller.

That bar code is a QR code. To get students even more enthused about a book a simple scan may reveal some familiar voices.

"It's really fun. I like to talk to other people and see what they like to read and the other book chats," says student Allison Kessler

So far 300 books have a code, but there are still thousands to go. Students say the idea for audio summaries was as simple as putting two classroom ideas together.

"They were actually writing summaries about the books and the year before that we were actually doing a project with scan codes so we were already familiar," says student Cassie Boddeker.

Since the premiere staff says more books are flying off the shelves.

"I have children who are doing book chats two and three a week. They just keep on signing up for more and more and when they want to record them they want to sound so well. They are really proud of themselves," says teacher Tammy Younglove.

While many of the summaries are recorded by students, staff hopes to get more community involvement in the coming months.
