As Western Kentucky University prepares for first year students to arrive this weekend, many of them will be volunteering their time at local organizations next week.
For the 9th year students will take part in Big Red's Blitz.
The community service events encourages the new students to volunteer and get to know the community.
The WKU Alive Center plans the event in hopes students can apply their skills to make a difference.
"A lot of them have done service in high school and some of them have never done it before and it's a way to show them what are some of the needs in the area and how they can apply their interests to make a difference in the area," says Aurelia Spaulding, Communications and Marketing coordinator at the WKU Alive Center.
Students will be helping 27 organizations this year.
The event kicks off August 23rd.
