House Speaker Greg Stumbo has filed legislation intended to further crack down on prescription drug abuse in a state where more people are dying from overdoses than car crashes.
The measure calls for the state's prescription monitoring program, known as "KASPER," to be placed under the jurisdiction of the Attorney General's office.
That program is currently administered by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services.
The bill also would bar doctors charged with over-prescribing painkillers from doling out medications.
Physicians found guilty would immediately be stripped of their licenses.
