New Training Program Available for Tobacco Vendors

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Several state agencies are offering training for retailers about changes in tobacco laws governing underage sales.

The training is offered free of charge at some local health departments and regional prevention centers. The Cabinet for Health and Family Services says Alcoholic Beverage Control's website at http://www.abc.ky.gov also offers free online training.

The cabinet notes that compliance reports indicate high compliance rates by Kentucky vendors. But Irene Centers of the Department for Public Health's Health Promotion Branch says there are new federal regulations that, combined with Kentucky's high rate of tobacco use, require extra effort to educate vendors.

The Public Health Department, ABC and the Division for Behavioral Health, Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities launched the training program, the first of its kind in the state.
