Newspaper Asks Judge To Open Teen Assault Case

Posted: Wed 2:11 PM, Aug 15, 2012

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- A Louisville newspaper is asking a judge to open a hearing where it will argue that files should be opened in the case of a teen who tweeted the names of two boys who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting her.

The Courier-Journal (http://cjky.it/PkN8zj) reports it filed a motion in Jefferson Circuit Court asking a judge to allow the public to attend the Aug. 21 hearing. The motion argues the hearing can be held without naming the boys involved and that the 17-year-old girl, Savannah Dietrich, has consented to being named and to opening the case.

The motion filed Tuesday said closing the hearing would only serve to shield adult participants from public scrutiny.

County Attorney spokesman Bill Patteson said he couldn't talk about the case because it is confidential.
