Official: Woman Killed in D.C. Chase Was Delusional

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) -- A federal law enforcement official says Miriam Carey had been deteriorating mentally for months -- and believed that President Barack Obama was communicating with her.

Carey is the woman who rammed a White House barrier with her car, and then led authorities on a chase to the streets around the U.S. Capitol building yesterday. There, she was shot and killed by police. Her one-year-old daughter, who was in the car with her, escaped serious injury and was taken into protective custody.

The federal official, who's been briefed about the investigation, says investigators have been interviewing Carey's family about her mental state, and they've been reviewing writings that were found in her condo in Stamford, Conn. According to the official, there was a "serious degradation in her mental health" in recent months. The official says she had made delusional "expressions about the president," and believed Obama was communicating to her. The concerns about her mental health were reported to police in Stamford.

Interviews with some of those who knew Carey suggest she was coming apart well before yesterday's episode. Her former employer says Carey suffered a head injury in a fall, and had then been fired from her job as a dental hygienist. And her mother said she was suffering from postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter last year.
