Oldham Could Have First Jail Under New Standards

By  |

A proposal to build a new jail in Oldham County will likely be the first such facility considered by state officials under new, more stringent requirements.

Department of Corrections spokeswoman Lisa Lamb told The Courier-Journal that Oldham officials were the first to make a request under the new standards so their application likely will be the first one considered.

Part of the new requirements, which were approved during an overhaul of corrections in 2011, call for county officials to get state approval before construction a new jail, and in order to do that they have to prove the facility is necessary.

Oldham officials say they don't anticipate any problems with that and hope to have a new jail constructed by the end of 2014.
