FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky's History Teacher of the Year has been announced. He is Ron Adkisson, an eighth-grade teacher of U.S. history at South Oldham Middle School in Crestwood.

The award provides Adkisson with a $1,000 honorarium. He will also compete for National History Teacher of the Year this fall. Also, South Oldham Middle School's library will receive history books and education materials from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and the History network. Other sponsors are the Kentucky Historical Society and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.

Adkisson, who has been at the school for 23 years, said in a release from the sponsors that he wants to have an engaging classroom environment that students don't want to miss.

Adkisson will be honored at the Oldham County school board meeting Monday.
