The mayor of a small eastern Kentucky city has been charged with trafficking in marijuana.
The Independent reports Olive Hill Mayor Danny Sparks was arrested Wednesday and charged with trafficking within 1,000 feet of a school after officers detained him near Olive Hill Elementary. Police say the arrest came as the result of an investigation that lasted for weeks.
The newspaper reports a call to Sparks' phone seeking comment went directly to voicemail.
Police told WKYT-TV that the charges are an embarrassment to the town, but officers have to pursue justice no matter where the allegations lead. The station said Sparks didn't answer the door of his office on Thursday when it attempted to get comment from him.
