The mayor of a small eastern Kentucky city has resigned following an arrest on a drug trafficking charge.

The Independent reports the Olive Hill City Council accepted the resignation on Tuesday of Danny Sparks, who was arrested six days earlier. Sparks didn't attend the brief meeting and did not mention his arrest in his hand-written resignation letter, which cited only "present circumstances" for stepping down.

Immediately after accepting Sparks' resignation, the council voted to appoint council member Kenny Fankel to serve out the rest of Sparks' term, which ends in December 2014.

The newspaper reports a large crowd attended the meeting and applauded when Fankel was appointed as mayor.
