HART COUNTY, Ky. -- I-65 remains closed at mile point 65.
The detour route via 53 remains in effect, but the US 31W corridor has very little movement in the Park City and Cave City areas.
Motorists who do not wish to be caught in the delay should use the Louie B Nunn/Cumberland Parkway exit and travel east to Glasgow and take US 31E north to rejoin the detour route.
Cleanup from this morning's semi crash continues. The cargo consists mainly of used vehicle batteries, requiring a hazardous materials protocol.
Cleanup and closure is expected to last until 9 or 10 pm.
UPDATE: 8/26/13 4:48 PM CDT
HART COUNTY, Ky. -- Northbound Interstate 65 remains closed at mile point 56 in Hart County.
A hazardous materials crew is removing cargo from the semi which crashed around 7 Monday morning.
Northbound traffic is being routed off at Cave City (Exit 53) onto KY 90 east, to US 31W north, to KY 70 east, to US 31E north, to KY 61 (Lincoln Parkway) north and rejoin I-65 in Elizabethtown (Exit 91).
Currently, I-65 is backed up from the detour closure at Exit 53 to approximately mile point 47.6, just south of Park City.
Traffic along the detour route is extremely heavy in the vicinity of Park City (Exit 48) and Cave City. The US 31W section between Park City and Cave City is moving slowly. US 31W traffic through Horse Cave and Munfordville is also heavy. Local residents in these areas may wish to utilize alternate routes to avoid US 31W intersections.
For motorists traveling through to Elizabethtown, motorists may also wish to exit I-65 in Bowling Green via the William Natcher Parkway north to Western Kentucky Parkway east and rejoin I-65 in Elizabethtown. Those needing to access areas to the east side of I-65 may wish to utilize the Louie Nunn/Cumberland Parkway east to Glasgow and access 31E.
UPDATE: 8/26/13 11:08 AM CDT
HORSE CAVE, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky transportation officials say the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 are closed at the 56 mile marker in Hart County.
A statement from the Department of Highways says the lanes were closed Monday morning after a semi-truck carrying cargo including batteries overturned. Spokesman Chris Jessie says in a statement the closure is expected to last through early afternoon as the cargo is unloaded and the vehicle removed.
A detour has been set up that requires motorists to get off the interstate at the Cave City exit and re-enter at the Horse Cave exit.
The statement says southbound traffic has not been affected.
Northbound I65 is reduced to one lane at mile point 56, just inside the Hart County line.
A semi has overturned carrying a load of batteries. Removal and cleanup is expected to take around four hours.
While complete closure is not anticipated, the incident is in a construction zone and backups are likely with only one lane open.
Motorists may wish to use US 31W as an alternate route. The incident location is between exits 54 and 58.
Updates will be provided as removal and cleanup continue.
