Owensboro police are using security cameras placed around a new public park to keep an eye on what's happening even when they are blocks away.
Police department spokesman Sgt. David Powell says the cameras supplement officers walking through Smothers Park as well as bicycle patrols in the area.
The cameras cover the main areas of the park and some swivel to scan across the park. Powell told the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer officers cannot control the cameras remotely yet, but said that technology is available.
The cameras can be viewed, via the Internet, from the front desk at the department, from officers' desks and from any patrol car that has a mobile data terminal.
Powell says there haven't been many calls from park visitors, but the cameras are a good precaution.
