Police Investigating Whether Officer Intoxicated

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Louisville police are trying to determine whether an off-duty detective who shot an unarmed man this week was under the influence at the time.

Police Chief Steve Conrad said investigators haven't yet interviewed the detective, Chauncey Carthan of the Narcotics/Intelligence Unit. The Courier-Journal (http://cjky.it/PMQLfE ) reports Conrad said evidence in the case will be submitted for analysis.

Conrad said he doesn't have many details of the shooting, which happened just before midnight Tuesday. Carthan was in an unmarked car. Police have not said what prompted him to shoot.

Police said earlier that the man's wound was not believed to be life-threatening.

No charges have been filed. Carthan, who has been an officer in Louisville since 2001, is on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.
