VINE GROVE, Ky. (AP) -- Police in Vine Grove have asked the U.S. Marshals to help find a man wanted in a rape investigation.

Police Chief Kenny Mattingly says he believes James Wilkerson has left the area, but should be considered armed and dangerous.

Vine Grove police say Wilkerson is accused of raping a woman on Sept. 25 and then stealing her car. Officers found the abandoned vehicle several hours later about five miles away.

Whiile he would not rule out that the suspect is being sheltered locally, Mattingly says no one has seen or heard from him since Sept. 25.

Mattingly says Wilkerson and the woman are acquaintances and have mutual friends.
