A Hart County High School student is arrested after police say he brought a gun to school.

The Hart County Sheriff's Office says they received information that Joshua Cahoe, 18, brought the gun to school Wednesday. Cahoe, was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon on school property, carrying a concealed deadly weapon and possession of a defaced firearm.

Another student notified staff of the weapon, and the school resource officer and principal immediately searched Cahoe.

"Before the search, the student stated there was one. It was in the room, unloaded, and there were no bullets on the student.. There were no bullets anywhere. He just brought the gun to school and shouldn't have," said Hart County Superintendent Ricky Line.

Line says the school has had a resource officer for the past seven years, and he was the first to respond.

"The resource officer acted quickly and fine. The student felt comfortable talking to him. It was no problem, and the student said, yeah, I brought it. I just made a mistake bringing it to school," said Line.

One parent says the officer helps, but has another safety recommendation.

They need to get metal detector at every door, or at least search them with a wand. Wand them down when they come in. I don't care if it takes them a while to do it. They need to be doing it so it'll be safer," said Hart County High School Parent Marion Timothy Esters.

The superintendent says there are currently no metal detectors inside the school, and there probably won't be, but hopes the school resource officer and the lesson learned today serve as a deterrent.

The Hart County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident. Following his arrest, Cahoe was taken to the Hart County Detention Jail.
