Prosecutors: Iraqi Described Insurgent Activities

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Federal prosecutors say an Iraqi charged in Kentucky with plotting to help terrorists back home described his insurgent activities to the FBI and even discussed attacks on U.S. troops in that country.

In a pre-trial brief filed Wednesday, prosecutors wrote that 24-year-old Mohanad Shareef Hammadi told investigators in May 2011 that he wanted to send money and weapons to insurgents. The interview took place in Bowling Green, Ky., where Hammadi is set to stand trial Aug. 28.

Hammadi faces 12 charges, including perjury and attempting to send material support to a known terrorist organization. A co-defendant, Waad Ramadan Alwan, pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing.

The pre-trial brief also outlined that prosecutors intend to rely on dozens of recordings of Hammadi made by a confidential informant during the investigation.
