Rains Come Too Late for Corn Crop in Owensboro

OWENSBORO, Ky. (AP) -- Rain finally came to drought-stricken areas of western Kentucky, but officials in Daviess County say it was too late to save much of the corn crop.

The Messenger-Inquirer reports that 5.44 inches of rain had been recorded at the Owensboro-Daviess County Regional airport as of Sunday. That makes July the wettest month since December, when 5.6 inches of rain fell.

Despite the deluge, the county is still about 13 inches below normal for rainfall.

Daviess County extension agent Clint Hardy says the rain came too late to benefit much of the corn crop. He says "a very large percentage" of corn didn't pollinate and he expects the crop to be "very, very disappointing."
