Rain kept most of the music away from the first of the Concerts in the Park series that kicked off tonight in Bowling Green, but there's more to look forward to this season.
The concert in the parks series began tonight with umbrellas and tents, but with a new schedule that brings patron music at Fountain Square Park and Circus Square Park at different times throughout the evening, organizers say this should be the best season yet.
"You got to go to two different parks so you could intermingle back and forth which of course benefits all the businesses downtown, because they're going to have that traffic flow, and that's the whole point of having events downtown," said The District's Robin Hardin.
Members of tonight's band Salvage Town agree.
"We feel like it's a great thing. The more Scottsville Road travels out toward the interstate, the more people get pulled away from downtown. It's a great area. There's great things going on down here, and the more we can pull people down here and keep things involved with downtown, it's a better atmosphere," said Salvage Town Lead Singer Kyle Beard.
The rain put a damper on that atmosphere tonight, and made it difficult for the bands to play, but music isn't the only thing the series offers. There's no shortage of food despite the rain.
"Verdi is open. 440 is open, but we wanted to also have additional restaurants so we named it the tasting of the district," said Hardin.
Brickyard Cafe and Mellow Mushroom bring a different selection of dishes each Friday to the square, and they're not alone. Several vendors like Chaney's Dairy Barn and Kona Ice offer treats that can cool you down.
"We need to support the downtown district. We're a new business, and we're trying to get our name out there, so people, please come visit us. I come to your neighborhoods, so please come visit me at the downtown square," said Kona Ice's Kona.
The series has just begun, with 8 more chances for sunshine, music and food.
The concert in the parks series will continue next Friday night from 5:30 to 8:30 with music from Match Daddy at Fountain Square Park, and continue from 8 to 11 with Andy and the Rockers at Circus Square Park.
