Rangers Encourage the Use of Life Jackets

BARREN COUNTY, Ky. (WBKO) -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says using a life jacket while on the water this summer could make a difference between life or death.

Park rangers say before hitting the water, you should check your safety equipment.

They encourage everyone to wear a life jacket.

They say you should make sure the safety device is in good condition and fits properly before you get in an emergency situation.

"You want to make sure when you're wearing it, that you have it completely zipped or buckled. However it fits, make sure it's a snug, tight fit. Make sure there are no rips or tears. You want to make sure the fabric is not faded or molded," says Ranger Holly Myers at Barren River Lake State Resort Park.

In the state of Kentucky, children under 12 years of age are required to wear a life jacket at all times while boating.

It is also mandatory for anyone riding a jet ski, no matter what age, to wear a life jacket.
