Ribbon Cut On Tornado Safe Rooms In Barren County

By Brett Baldeck |

BARREN COUNTY, Ky. - Residents in Barren County are now safer in the event severe weather strikes.

10 new tornado safe rooms have been built throughout the county. Glasgow - Barren County Emergency Management says each room can withstand wind up to 250 MPH. The funding for construction came from FEMA grants which stated the county was in need for more weather protection.

"We have a vulnerable population that shows we have enough people that would warrant that they need a place to go and they don't have basements or a safe room that they could go to," says Tony Richey from Glasgow - Barren County Emergency Management.

Each safe room can hold 100 people including space for 4 wheelchairs. Barren County is currently in the process to fund an additional shelter to bring their total to 11.
