“I chose to fund this program at McNeill because I think children deserve to be exposed to the arts. Not only proven to raise test scores, but it may open a new world to a child that they never knew existed,” said Katherine Sikora.

The Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center and students from the W.R. McNeill Elementary school will collaborate this week to create a mural in the school. Funded by a gift to SKyPAC from Katherine Sikora, whose son attends the school, this project will allow the students a hands-on opportunity to collaborate with SKyPAC’s education team.

Students submitted drawings earlier this year and SKyPAC’s Education and Visual Arts Director, Andee Rudloff, used those drawings to create a design for the mural. On Thursday Rudloff will visit each class, discuss the project and talk about how to choose colors. On Friday each class will have an opportunity to paint a portion of the mural using the knowledge they learned during Rudloff’s visit.

“I chose to fund this program at McNeill because I think children deserve to be exposed to the arts. Not only proven to raise test scores, but it may open a new world to a child that they never knew existed,” said Katherine Sikora. Sikora goes on to say, “If one door is opened to a child then I have been blessed enough to change a life and I think that makes me one of the most fortunate people in Bowling Green. I was introduced to the arts by my grandmother and I experienced art in school and it changed my life.”

This partnership will also allow students at McNeill Elementary the opportunity to participate in several theater workshops during the months of February and March as well attending all of SKyPAC’s school day and youth theater performances free-of-charge thanks to Sikora’s gift.
