Police say the Monroe County Attorney's Office received one of the first bomb threats this morning.

The woman who answered the phone couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"'Listen and listen to me close. Your building has explosives, and they will detonate in 15 minutes.' It was a male voice and, I immediately thought it was a joke and I said 'hello' after they said 'goodbye', and no one answered."

When legal secretary, Nanette Thomas came into work at the Monroe County Attorney's office this morning, she never expected one of her first phone calls would alarm the entire town.

"I hung up the phone, and I called for my coworker, and she told me to call the police department as she was getting the other employees out of the building," she says.

Police asked all businesses near the county attorney's office to move across the street to the Court House lawn while they checked the building.

"That's where we stayed for approximately three hours. The police department told us not to come back to our office until it was clear," Thomas says.

Soon other businesses started receiving phone calls too.

While places like Wal-Mart, McDonald's, Sonic, and the downtown area were evacuating, the rest the county had been left in a state of confusion.

"We couldn't get through town and I was going to the store, and I was going to the store. I went back home and I found out all this was going on," Tompkinsville resident, Joe Brown says.

"I couldn't believe it. I thought, 'why would they pick us? Why an elementary school here?' So I was really surprised," Sharon Moore says.

No explosives were found in any businesses.

Employees say they were evacuated from their businesses for about three hours.
