UPDATED: Former Police Officer Shot and Killed In Tompkinsville

Kentucky State Police say that Charles Hammer, 81, of Tompkinsville has been arrested and charged with the murder of Herbert Proffitt.

Hammer is currently in the Monroe County Jail.

Proffitt worked in law enforcement for over 50 years, including serving as the Tompkinsville Police Chief and the Monroe County Sheriff.

Police are still investigating this case.

ORIGINAL STORY:

A former Monroe County Deputy Sheriff was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon.

Police say, Herbert Proffitt, 82, was shot about 3:15 on Rush Lane in Monroe County.

Proffitt was pronounced dead at the Monroe County Hospital at 4:20p.m.

Kentucky State Police Troopers and Detectives from Post 15 were still at the scene as of 6:45 Tuesday night.

No further information was given.
