St. Jude: Becky and Ryan's Story

By Lauren Hanson |

MEMPHIS, Tn. (WBKO) - Ryan, 7, was feeling lethargic and wasn't playing as well, so his mom took him to the pediatrician.

"She took some blood tests and immediately sent us to St. Jude. She saw a discrepancy in his blood work and said St. Jude was the best place to go if there was a problem and by the end of the day we were admitted and he had leukemia," said Becky.

St. Jude is a world leader in developing new and improved treatments for children with cancer.

The hospital is unique in that patients and their families don't pay for anything that isn't covered by insurance.

The parents' attention is entirely on their child.

"It's just wonderful to not have to worry about the financial aspect of your child being sick," said Becky.

Doctors and nurses are also able to give the child extra attention.

"They know him by name, they all care for him, and make little presents for him," explained Becky.

For Becky and Ryan, words can't express their gratitude to St. Jude.

"When your child's diagnosed with cancer, it's very scary and to come to a place like St. Jude it's just made the whole process comforting and reassuring and you can't thank them enough for all that they've done to save your child's life and to give him a nurturing environment to heal," said Becky.
