St. Jude: Dr. James Cripps

MEMPHIS, Tn. (WBKO) - St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is considered a world leader in developing treatments for children with cancer.

"People often ask me how's it working at a hospital where there's constantly children in there fighting cancer? It's actually one of the happiest places I've ever worked," said Dr. James Cripps.

The Louisville native works with cells. He looks at how and why they die.

"It's actually a more new area in our field and we're doing a lot of groundbreaking work in our lab," said Dr. Cripps.

When that work turns into a treatment, the doctors and researchers at St. Jude share their knowledge to help others.

"It gives the ability to do the kind of groundbreaking research that we're doing, to be honest with you I don't see any other place in the country that has the capability, the facilities, the support that St. Jude does to do that and that's what makes it such a special place." said Dr. Cripps.

That vision has helped push the overall cancer survival rate from 20% in 1962 to more than 80% today.

"If you have an idea, let's look at it and pursue it even if it's kind of crazy because chances are those are the ideas that are going to make the biggest impact in our field and also in science and in medicine,"
