MEMPHIS, Tn. (WBKO) - A childhood dream has turned into a passion for Dr. Nicole Barnes.

"My mother said when I was a baby, well three years old, a toddler that I wanted to be a doctor and own a gas station and as I got older I thought about was different things, but was able to do some different programs in the Kentucky area at the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville that molded me and shaped me to go to medical school," said Dr. Barnes.

Her dream came true as the Kentucky native received her medical degree from the University of Louisville. She joined St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as a Pediatric Endocrinologist.

"It's a blessing for me to be able to meet these kids and see them grow and see them get better and healthier," said Dr. Barnes.

Dr. Barnes works with children after their treatments to help fix the damage caused by the cancer.

"The majority of patients that we see are patients that have completed therapy and now they want to go out an be like regular kids. They want to grow, they want to go through puberty, they want to have enough energy and be normal children," said Dr. Barnes.

While Dr. Barnes' job is to help the patients at St. Jude, they're also helping her.

"They encourage me because they are so strong and they have taught me to appreciate life, appreciate every birthday," said Dr. Barnes.
