A University of Louisville student accused of shining a laser pointer at a police helicopter is facing felony charges.
Louisville police say 19-year-old Jeffry Ledington is charged with two wanton endangerment counts. He was arrested at his dormitory early Sunday, shortly after the incident.
The helicopter pilot, Louisville Officer Carey Hirtzel, says the green laser lit up the entire cockpit and all he could see was green. He says he averted his eyes and turned the helicopter away from the beam of light.
Hirtzel says the aircraft was hit again, but he was able to locate the source of the laser.
Authorities say what some consider a prank is a serious offense that has become more common. The FBI says 2,750 laser pointer incidents have been reported nationwide this year.
