Democratic House Speaker Greg Stumbo says federal health care reforms will benefit Kentuckians and that he will oppose efforts by Republican lawmakers to impede two key parts of the Affordable Care Act.

Stumbo told reporters Wednesday that he believes the state "would be ill-served" not to take full advantage of the health care reforms that would expand Medicaid coverage to some 400,000 additional uninsured Kentuckians.

Senate Republicans are considering legislation intended to block Gov. Steve Beshear from implementing a so-called health care exchange to help people find affordable insurance plans and to prevent him from opening the state's Medicaid program to additional recipients.

Stumbo said such legislation would have little shot at passing in the House.
