It's now the annual summer for soldiers event that was held at Wah-Bah Steakhouse today.

The event is a fundraiser an opportunity to send care packages to soldiers serving abroad.

For Specialist Michael Keefer this event is special especially when he's overseas.

"When you get mail, you get a package or a letter from home from a big event like this, it's a big morale booster. It keeps your spirits up to help you push through for a couple more days, to be able to go on and make it back safely," said Keefer.

Army recruiters who have served worldwide echoed what Keefer said.

"Out of the blue you get a package that you didn't expect, it's not from your mom, it's not from your wife, it's just from an American who cares. It swells your chest. It reaffirms why we do what we do," said Army Recruiter Sgt. Greg Grayson.

The event featured live music all day, dance performances, poker run and several vendors.

Organizers say for a relatively new event, they've been successful.

"Between the last two events, we raised close to $17,000 and sent more than 650 care packages to local troops. So, we thought we would just do it again, and the community support has been unbelievable," said organizer, Ashley Slaughter.

It's community support that they hope makes a soldier's day.

Several hundred people stopped by and the event had several sponsors, but if you want to donate anytime, you can do so at any us bank.
