NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Secretary of State Tre Hargett is warning of the emergence of a familiar scam under a new name.
Hargett said in a release that his office has received inquiries from businesses and other organizations about an official-looking notice claiming that they must fill out a form and pay a $125 registration fee.
Hargett said the group calling itself Annual Business Services is in no way affiliated with his office, and the state's annual corporation registration fee is just $20.
The scam is similar to one reported several months ago that originated with an entity called Corporate Records Services.
Hargett advised corporations to use caution before providing private information and to call his office to verify the authenticity of questionable requests.
