One issue that should be on the minds of candidates and lawmakers is what's known as the "fiscal cliff."
One financial expert explained how it will affect all Americans by the end of the year if something is not done.
This fiscal crisis has been developing for years and she says it needs to be on the minds of those in Washington.
"They're anticipating a loss of over 2 million jobs... a constriction of the GDP of four to five percent...and most likely the economy hurdling into another recession," said Certified Financial Planner Jeanne Fisher.
The "fiscal cliff" crisis is the simultaneous increase in taxes and cuts in spending that will take place at the end of this year.
This may result in higher taxes, a $1.2 trillion cut in defense and domestic spending, and a 27 percent cut in Medicare payments to providers, which could make finding participating providers more difficult for those on Medicare.
