FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky officials say this year's "Click It or Ticket" enforcement campaign resulted in more than 19,000 citations for failing to buckle up.
The annual effort was supported by more than 220 state and local law enforcement agencies. It was held from late May to early June.
The campaign's main goal is to encourage seat belt use by enforcing Kentucky's seat belt law.
As a result, citations were given to 19,594 motorists for not buckling up.
State Transportation Secretary Mike Hancock says the campaign's goal is not to write tickets but to save lives.
Officers who set up 642 traffic safety checkpoints during the campaign also made 1,103 drunken driving arrests.
