Two Families Mourn After Murder-Suicide In Horse Cave

By Brett Baldeck |

Family members of 28-year-old Jamie Tapscott can barely put into words their loss. Kentucky State Police say Tapscott was shot Monday night at her home in Horse Cave.

Her uncle, Larry Sexton, says Jamie was always full of love.

"She was just outgoing, friendly, she loved everybody she never had cross words with anybody. She would do anything in the world for you," says Sexton.

KSP ruled Tuesday afternoon the shooting was a murder suicide. Tapscott was home alone with her three children when 32-year-old Jason Horton entered the home.

"At 6:08 p.m. we received a call from a 7 year old stating that his mother had been shot by his uncle. When our KSP personnel arrived we found Ms. Tapscotts body on the floor," says Trooper Jonathan Biven from the Kentucky State Police.

Tapscott had one child with Horton and another with his brother. Police say shortly after the incident in Horse Cave Horton shot himself at his home in Cave City.

Family says the couple recently separated and Jamie's Uncle says over the last month Horton began to take things too far.

"He had been stalking her the whole time that they split up from what I gather he would call them and harass them," says Sexton.

Hart County Circuit Court confirmed a Domestic Violence Order was placed on Horton on November 19. It is still unclear what motive Horton had, which has left two families asking the question: "Why?".

"Who knows what goes through anybody's head you know it can be anything. Only person that knows is him," says Sexton.

As the families mourn their loss authorities say the investigation continues.

The family of Jason Horton declined our request for an interview, but they did say they are shocked by the incident.
