U.S. Honors Veterans Over Memorial Day Weekend

NEW YORK (AP) -- The nation is marking Memorial Day with somber ceremonies, flag planting at cemeteries and parades.

On Sunday, a Manhattan congregation tied gold ribbons on the church's fence in honor of fallen soldiers since the Iraq War began.

Marine Corps' chaplain and Rear Admiral Margaret Kibben told church goers that what veterans have done "has allowed us to be here."

And President Barack Obama made a surprise visit to Afghanistan.

He spent time Sunday, speaking with troops and visiting soldiers at a base hospital.
