PHILIPPINES (AP) U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has ordered the U.S.S. George Washington to the Philippines to help with recovery from the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan.

The aircraft carrier has 5,000 sailors, and more than 80 aircraft on board. The crew is being recalled from shore leave, and the ship is expected to leave this evening. Hagel is sending other Navy ships to the Philippines as well, and Marines are already in the island nation, to help distribute aid.

As many as 10,000 people are believed to have been killed in the storm, and officials say that number could rise due to unsanitary conditions and disease.
