Fort Campbell Woman Pleads Guilty to Abusing Her Child

She says she was aware of the burns but disregarded them, knowingly causing the boy to suffer more pain and scarring than if she had taken him for treatment.

FORT CAMPBELL, KY (WBKO) -- A woman on Fort Campbell Military Base pleads guilty in federal court to charges of wantonly abusing her child.

The U.S Attorney's Office says 28-year-old Shanika D'June Pickens, also known as Shanika Campbell, admits between January and September of 2011, her son, who was less than 12 years old at the time, suffered burns on his right side and back.

She says she was aware of the burns but disregarded them, knowingly causing the boy to suffer more pain and scarring than if she had taken him for treatment.

Campbell further admits between October 2011 and January 2012, she failed to provide adequate nourishment to the child, Causing him to be hospitalized in Vanderbilt for malnutrition.

Campbell is scheduled for sentencing on November 13 in Paducah.
