WKU Graduates Hopeful About Finding Jobs That Use Their Degrees

"It's crazy knowing I'm going to be out in the real world now and no longer taking classes," said one graduate, Rachel Wilson.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -- They went from students to graduates during WKU's commencement ceremonies.

"It's crazy knowing I'm going to be out in the real world now and no longer taking classes," said one graduate, Rachel Wilson.

They'll have the memories.

"Eating Papa John's every opportunity I could, especially when I had class with the guys I'm standing here with," Kyle Gardner, another graduate.

"The atmosphere of WKU and being here on campus and making friends," Wilson said.

And the values.

"Hard work and dedication," said Scott Burch, also a graduate.

To carry with them for the rest of their lives.

While what it took to get to this day was at times a struggle, they know they'll need a lot of patience as the look ahead to their careers.

"All of us are a little stressed out, but hopefully something will open up sometime soon," Gardner said.

Several studies during the past few years show that many college grads are working jobs that don't even require a degree.

Despite those facts, grads today were hopeful.

"I'm not so worried about it. If it doesn't happen right now, it'll happen eventually," said Tim Phelps, a graduate.

They're already planning a few strategies as they wait.

"It's all about who you know, about making those connections, about getting in touch with people, going outside your comfort zone," said another graduate, Ashley Hurt.

"The main priority is just getting a job, getting money, getting stuff coming in as I continue to look for something better fit for me," Burch said.

No matter what, each graduate knew they accomplished something big Saturday.

WKU conferred almost 1,400 degrees Saturday during the morning and afternoon ceremonies of its 174th commencement.
