WKU Nursing Program Receives Grant

By Melissa Warren |

WKU's School of Nursing is hoping a new grant will allow them to train more registered nurses.

The grant is from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration.

The nearly $627,000 grant will help fund traineeships for those pursuing careers as nurse practitioners, something the nursing program says the country is in need of in many areas.

"The nurse practitioner population is increasingly becoming the medical care provider, particularly in rural and underserved areas. With the Affordable Care Act, it's predicted that we'll need more primary care providers than we have at the present time," said WKU Nursing Associate Professor Eve Main.

Main says WKU is one of 60 universities to receive this grant, and the only one in Kentucky.
