BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Western Kentucky University officials spent a majority of the day preparing for the football home opener scheduled to kick off tomorrow night.
"It's a little tougher on a Friday night because it's a work day. Campus will be open, but campus will close at 3 P.M. tomorrow. Parking for the football game will start at 4 P.M., so that will give us a little time get students, faculty and staff off campus," WKU's Assistant Athletic Director of Communications, Michael Schroeder, said.
WKU Parking and Transportation officials have a plan in place and are working to transition traffic smoothly. They say access to Avenue of Champions will be by event permit only after 3:30 P.M.
"Any event permit holder should approach Avenue of Champions from University Boulevard. We're also closing College Heights Boulevard at Hilltop Drive, at 4:30 P.M." Director of WKU's Parking and Transportation Services, Jennifer Tougas, said.
Once inside the stadium, Schroeder says university officials will be on hand to direct ticket holders, along with students, to their new seating area.
"We created extra seating for the students. We just had to move them from directly behind the visitors bench to comply with conference U.S.A. rules," Schroeder said.
The WKU Police Department will also be patrolling near the gates and throughout the stadium.
"Safety is always a concern with campus and that's why our officers focus their efforts on inside the stadium. We want to make sure that people who are coming to the game are able to enjoy it without concern," Captain Dominic Ossello said.
Campus and city police, along with Kentucky State Police, will be working together to direct traffic after the game.
