WKU Researcher A Co-Winner In Science Idol Contest

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) -- A Western Kentucky University researcher has been chosen as a co-winner in a "Science Idol" competition in Washington.

WKU says Jill Maples shared the award at a recent symposium on biomedical research excellence. Maples is an assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Recreation and Sport.

The symposium was sponsored by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health.

The "Science Idol" contestants had only three minutes to give a presentation in front of three judges and an audience of other biomedical scientists.

Maples' presentation highlighted her research program, which is focused on changes that occur in skeletal muscle metabolism in response to exercise.
