Women across the world love their shoes. Often the obsession starts when they're little girls, even the children of celebrities like Suri Cruise have been snapped walking in tiny high heels.
"I think it dresses an outfit up; no matter what kind of outfit you have on, a heel it always dresses it up," said Jennifer Brashear, a high heel wearer.
"I love shoes. I really have a shoe problem and I have many shoes of different heights, platforms, over the knee. I love shoes and I wear a lot of high heels," said high heel wearer Dana Kania.
However, the allure of an astronomical high heel can come with a price.
"Most of the time it depends on how the heel is shaped like around the toes is can be a little constrictive around the toe area," said Brashear.
"We see a lot of people come in with pain. A lot of people who wear fashion shoes have heel pain or mid-foot pain because of the way their biomechanics are thrown off because of the shoe gear," said Dr. Rick Young, a podiatrist.
Dr. Young sees the damaging effects of heels on a daily basis.
"I don't understand it because if I'm in pain I'm going to change it, but I guess they feel like they have to," said Dr. Young.
Besides pain in your feet, women can develop calluses, hammertoes, and bunions.
"If the deformity gets bad enough you can't fit in your shoes then you become a candidate for surgery and to the area it take you a long time to get back in your shoes," said Dr. Young.
To avoid injury, Dr. Young recommends wearing a shoe with structure and a sturdy sole.
If you can't live without your heels, he says to wear a reasonable shoe to work and change into your heels when you get there.
"I have two hour shoes that I know after two hours it's time to come out of them, so I usually wear those to church," said Kania.
As for high heel fans, they say they'll deal with the pain and continue wearing their heels.
If you wear flat shoes there are a couple of things you should be aware of too. Dr. Young says if you wear flip flops you can catch infections from cuts and scrapes and if you wear ballet flats, look for a pair with structure and a solid sole.
