BOWLING GREEN, Ky (WBKO) -- Meijer is a Michigan based company founded nearly 80 years ago. A branch of the company has found it's southernmost home in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
"I wouldn't feel good about being in business if I didn't think by being a part of the town and help be part of a little better life for a lot of people," said Hank Meijer, Co-Chairman.
The “super center” provides 190,000 square foot of shopping space for customer's to explore a variety of product.
As most know, Houchens, Kroger and Wal-mart are located just down the road from this new store.
Many question if competition will be a factor in the new business's success.
"There are a lot of good choices for folks in Bowling Green and we recognize that. That is very humbling. We hope what people will find here is pricing that is very competitive and an environment you feel a little better shopping in. We strive for over all good quality and over all good selection," said Hank Meijer, Co-Chairman.
Today's ribbon cutting allowed the community to venture through the store and learn how Meijer feels it's store is different from other striving “super-centers” within the community.
"One is the quality of our people and the quality of the products we sell," said Hank Meijer, Co-Chairman.
"The produce is a lot fresher, the quality of the products is definitely a lot better," said Caitlynn Oberhausen.
Meijer says the company's strive to be selective helps it's success.
"We would like to think that our buyers are very careful and that we're in a large enough size to be important to our farmers and our growers and suppliers. Yet, not so big that we have to be selective and say we like this crop or we don't like that crop," said Hank Meijer, Co-Chairman.
Along with today's events, Meijer presented a check to Warren County Public Schools, for $25,000, to help support the districts new synergy center.
Meijer's grand opening is scheduled for Sunday, June8. The store has organized an in-door community picnic and giveaway.
