UPDATED 2:06 AM -- The latest update on the condition of the daughter-in-law of Logan County Sheriff Wallace Whittaker is promising, but she still has a long way to go.
Sheriff Whittaker says Kelly Whittaker is still in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Trauma Center.
She has had several surgeries since the wreck, including to her brain and face.
He says Kelly has started to respond to medical staff and has even communicated with her family, however doctors say she is still not out of danger and she is still "extremely critical."
Sheriff Whittaker also says he thanks everyone for their donations, prayers, and help not only to his family, but to the Hargis family as well.
LOGAN COUNTY, Ky (WBKO) -- The daughter-in-law of Logan County Sheriff Wallace Whittaker is still in critical condition, after a car accident last week.
Kelly Whittaker was involved in a two-car collision on U.S. 68-80 in Logan County on January 22.
Police say James Kemp of Russellville was operating a tandem truck, when he made a left-hand turn from Hardison Road into the left westbound lane of 68-80.
Kemp said he continued in the left-hand lane to allow traffic to clear, and Whittaker struck the rear of his truck.
Whittaker sustained critical injuries, and was airlifted to Vanderbilt Medical Center.
Sheriff Whittaker says his daughter-in-law is having surgery to repair a crushed pelvis, and that she is responding, but has not woken up.
For those wishing to help with medical expenses, an account has been set up at BB&T, under the Whittaker family's name. Donations can be made at any branch.
