U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth has reintroduced a bill to create a federal grant program inspired by boxing great Muhammad Ali that would promote global respect and understanding.

The Muhammad Ali Legacy Act seeks to build on the Louisville native's humanitarian work.

Yarmuth, a Louisville Democrat, reoffered the bill during the same week that Ali is celebrating his 71st birthday.

The bill authorizes $5 million a year for the grant program, which would be administered by the State Department. It would fund U.S. nonprofit groups that work to promote the values of respect, understanding and communication.

Yarmuth introduced the bill in the last Congress as well.

The grant program would prepare young leaders to contribute to society through peace building, conflict resolution, violence prevention and character education.
