WARREN COUNTY, Ky. (WBKO) - They say its been a long overdue project. Now, Briarwood Elementary will have more space for students this school year.

"The kids are very excited to come to school next week and see all the progress that has been made," says Principal Jason Kupchella.

Piles of dirt just one year ago are now six brand new classrooms at Briarwood Elementary. Principal Jason Kupchella has overseen the project from start to finish.

"It's kind of an exciting experience to see this go from a piece of paper on a blueprint to being realized today and I have been able to be a part of that process all the way through," says Kupchella.

Two classrooms are located in the primary section of the school, with four more in the intermediate. The additional space couldn't come at a better time.

"I mean this school was probably built for about 650 and we have been close to 750. I have been here five years so we have been over crowded since that time," says Kupchella.

Finishing touches are being made on the outside. Inside, teachers like Melody Kerr are preparing to do more, with less students.

"You know with us being able to add on to our building it's obviously going to be able to make our class sizes smaller as far as the number of students in each classroom which I think will make a much better learning environment for our kids," says Kerr.

Kerr's first grade classroom is set to go. Her summer ended early, as soon as she could get inside her new space.

"I usually spend July a couple days a week up here just getting everything ready to go so it's all ready for the first day of school," says Kerr.

Students first look at the new additions will be next week during open house.
