BOWLING GREEN / CAVE CITY Ky/ (WBKO) - Heat this winter may be delayed for those who need it most. Community Action says a government shutdown has delayed their LIHEAP program by at least once week.

"It's extreme frustration and disappointment," says Executive Director Cheryl Allen.

It's another blow to Community Action, who faced millions in sequestration cuts earlier this year. The organization works with those who are in crisis and now some employees may be facing one of their own.

"Our staff see that day in and day out. Now they don't know how long they will have a job because they have seen us lay off so many staff lately and over the last couple of years," says Allen.

The pain from week two of a government shutdown also continues to impact Mammoth Cave and surrounding businesses.

"This week is fall break and that is usually a big week for us and as you can see there are not that many people out," says Mary Lou Carey from the Kentucky Action Park.

Parking lots remain empty and amusement rides stand still. Although it's a separate attraction from the cave, Kentucky Action Park relies on those tourists.

"We are open, but Mammoth Cave is closed and I have had people call and cancel cabins because they said they were coming to see Mammoth Cave," says Carey.

For business owners like Carey, the future of her business now rests with lawmakers in Washington.

"They can't solve their problems let alone going to Iraq and Pakistan and trying to solve their problems. We need to solve our problems here at home," says Carey.

Business owners in and around Mammoth Cave want tourists to know that although the cave is closed due to the government shutdown, their businesses remain open.
