Salvation Army Helps Local Kids Shop For Back To School

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - We showed you Thursday just how expensive back to school shopping can be. Friday, a local organization hoped to take a little stress off parents.

The Salvation Army and Target teamed up to provide 23 gift cards to families in need. Kids grabbed a volunteer and checked off items on their supply list. Purchases made Friday may not be something on a child's wish list, but it is very important to parents and their child's future.

"Christmas time, school time, birthday time all those times are very expensive times for parents. School is a necessity. It's not something they want, they have to have these things so we just wanted to provide some leverage for some parents so they can be sure to provide those items for their children," says Heather Gordon, Director of Social Services.

Kids were able to buy new shoes and clothing once their supply list was checked off. Some volunteers even gave money out of their own pocket to help.
