"From the very early age of nine he was very interested in the community, very involved in projects to benefit the entire community."
Those are the words of Tommy Harrison, he and other friends of Zeke Walters say, he's an exceptional leader, and just a good 'ole country boy.
"He was always helping the park and before long he took up banjo playin' and became very good." says Rodney Kirtley, a former Judge/Executive in Muhlenberg County. "He's gotten to be pretty popular, pretty much demand around this area."
Zeke plays his banjo for audiences throughout the bluegrass, including Louisville and Lexington. On July 29th, Zeke even played at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.
Kirtley adds, "we look forward to seeing him on the big stage some day."
Besides being a talented musician, Zeke helped restore this 150-year-old cabin at Paradise Park in Powderly. His 4-H group, worked the whole week of spring break in 2005.
Zeke explained what happened. "We took mortar mix and chicken wire and sealed it all up over spring break for 4-H club."
Kirtley added how reliable Zeke was. "Anytime we need a project or anything, Zeke was always there to help. He was really involved in the 4-H club. If we had a project, we'd call the 4-H and Zeke would get his buddies to volunteer, they would come down to help."
Zeke says, restoring this cabin was just pay back to the community he grew up in. He credits his parents for his desire to give back, saying they told him no one's ever too good to help.
"My family ever since I was little they always taught me a real good meaning of being a friend, if somebody calls you be dependable, stuff like that."
Kirtley had more kind words for Zeke. "He's the kind of young person you'd like to see grow up in your community. He takes involvement and he's concerned about the future of his community."
So much so, that he spends time teaching the kids in Muhelberg County about music, the history of bluegrass, and the importance of education." I try to set a good example and everything for them," Zeke said.
Kirtley just wishes other followed suit, "we'd like to see more people like Zeke."
