Greg Wheeler basically grew up at the Flippin Fire Department. His mom is the Assistant Fire Chief and his dad is a firefighter. So when this seventeen year old woke up in the middle of the night to pouring down rain, naturally the first thing he thought of was seeing if the department was okay.

"I was on my porch and I saw the water," Greg explains.

The amount of water was something no one expected - the fire department was flooding. He knew he had to act fast. "I didn't think it was going to rain that much," Greg says.

Knowing he didn't have time to lose, Greg started working quickly. "I came down here and started driving fire trucks out," He explains.

Greg says it wasn't an easy feat. "It got about four foot. It was pretty deep. It came pretty quick, too. When it got to my hips, yeah, I started to get a little bit scared."

The Flippin Firefighters agree that Greg literally kept the Department afloat that night.

"He outta get more credit. I don't think there are too many seventeen year olds who would wake up in the middle of the night to come down to the fire department and help move the trucks out," Eric England, a Flippin Fire Department Firefighter says.

And helping the fire department is not the only way Greg is giving back.

"I enlisted in the Army, and I'm just waiting to find out when I leave."

His reason?

"Seemed like the right thing to do. It seemed like the best thing."

As for being a hero, Greg says he just happened to be in the right place at the right time. "Well, I didn't even mean to. I'm just lucky I was awake and saw it. I really didn't even mean to."

We honor Greg Wheeler as this week's Hometown Hero. If there's someone you see as a Hero, nominate them from the "Hometown Hero" link.
