Kentuckians to Face Limits on Cold, Allergy Meds

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Kentuckians would face strict limits on the amount of over-the-counter cold and allergy medications that they can purchase, under a bill that won final passage Friday.
The goal is to limit access to medicines like "Claritin D" and "Allegra" that contain pseudoephedrine, a key ingredient in the illegal drug methamphetamine that's being widely abused in the state.
The proposal would limit purchases to no more than 7.2 grams in a month or 24 grams in a year. People who need more would have to get a prescription.
The restrictions would allow individuals to purchase roughly two boxes of the medications per month or seven boxes per year.
Gov. Steve Beshear has not said if he will sign the measure into law.
The legislation is Senate Bill 3.
